Type 2 Diabetic Insulin Therapy
Do I have to take Insulin?
If the oral medication you are using, the diet program you are on, or the exercise regimen you are doing is not working anymore, you might have to take insulin. Or you might also have to take insulin right away if your blood sugar was like mine when you were diagnosed. Mine was 1908, for a little more info about me see my about me page. With a blood glucose reading over a certain amount, you will be put on insulin immediately to get your blood glucose level under control. Otherwise coma and death are a possibility. After regulating your blood sugar you may be able to wean off of insulin with proper diet, exercise and possibly oral medication. You also may not be able to do this and you may have to stay on insulin thereafter. You will work together with your doctor to see what your situation requires.
Is Insulin better than oral medication?
Some people can control their diabetes with pills, diet and exercise, but after some years, this might not be the case anymore. If you can no longer control your diabetes well with pills, diet and exercise then insulin injections will control the amount of glucose in your blood. You will notice the lowering of your blood glucose readings through your finger sticks almost immediately. Plus your doctor will verify your blood glucose is under better control through your A1c test.
Does insulin have any side effects?
If you take insulin injections you are more likely to get low blood glucose (hypoglycemia) than if you just take the pills and watch what you eat. Plus because you are taking insulin, you don’t have to watch what you eat as much as if you are not taking insulin. Therefore, another possible side effect is you might have a tendency to gain more weight while taking insulin.
